Unfortunately, I had the same issue.

To get around this, we started using the native Android mail client or an app called Touchdown.
We then sync our e-mails via push notifications, and it seems to work well. (We didn't see a real delay in response time.)
You can respond to the sms notifications, but that's rather tedious.
