Having the node managed via SNMP is not a requirement, but it's certainly the prefered, recommended, and easiest way. It is also the only way in which discovery works. If you find yourself unable to manage the node via WMI then there is an equivalent "Configure Server" button in the assigned application that still allows for automatic configuration.
